Question What is the difference between your First Aid at Work Course and those delivered by St John Ambulance and the Red Cross?
Sue Durham
Our Answer From October 1st 2009- all first aid courses must be either delivered by an HSE Approved Centre(like FANE)- or be a qualification approved by Ofqual- the duration- now 3 days for the full course and 2 for the refresher are set by the HSE- as is the content of each course. Often the courses delivered by the larger organisations are significantly more expensive than ours- this is due (in the main) to their greater overheads from both larger numbers of staff and premises and not because there is a difference in the course itself or the quality!
As a basic rule of thumb-any course is only as good as the trainer that delivers it on the day- so to ensure a good course it is always an idea to ask about the trainer who will be delivering your course, their qualifications, background and experience- you can check out ours here !- also, if it is an in house course ask whether they will be prepared to tailor the course to meet your business needs
Question I run a small cafe- do i need to attend a Nationally recognised food safety course John Newcastle
Our Answer
Technically, no!- the FSA guidance is that a 'food handler'- someone who prepares, cooks stores, or serves food- should have 'training commensurate with their duties'- no mention of nationally recognised courses!
However there are some very important reasons to attend
Many Environmental Health Officers and employers will recommend that a recognised course is completed
If you are seeking work in a food business- a recognised qual will carry a lot of weight with employers
A nationally recognised qual is a set standard and is quality assured by the awarding body
Completing a nationally recognised exam means your knowledge has been independantly assessed and verified- which is much better for you and your business than an 'attendance certificate' from a non accredited course
Again we would advise before booking a course that you talk to the trainer, find out about their experience and discuss any issues or problems you have- even a nationally recognised course can be tailored to meet your needs! '
